What I’m Thankful For……

What a gorgeous Thanksgiving weekend we’ve had this year.  The weather was absolutely amazing.  So very much to be thankful for.  This morning as I sat to blog about it I couldn’t help but think how truly blessed I am.  This weekend with the gorgeous weather there was ample time to work outside.  Chris spent the entire weekend on scaffolding putting the soffit on our new addition and making sure everything is weather tight.  His holiday weekend was anything but a vacation.  I certainly appreciate all his hard work!    This is a shot I took of him with the boys when our project first got underway.  He’s put in countless hours since then!

And of course I’m also so very thankful for the 5 gorgeous children we share.  Here’s a shot I took of them yesterday on the lawn…..

And here’s a very similar shot from 4 years ago…..

You’ll have to forgive the quality of this second image… with all the construction I have some hard drives in storage and I actually took a picture of a photograph I have so I could blog it.  It’s absolutely amazing to me how grown up my kids are getting.  Awesome to see!!  I hope this weekend you enjoyed sometime with your family and that you too have much to be thankful for!!

Back to School!

In some ways it feels like summer has flown by, in other ways it feels like school was forever ago.  We’ve had such a crazy summer.  Chris has been off work since mid-April working on my studio, and the kids have been home since the end of June.  With all the contractors coming and going as well, it’s been a rat race.  I’m not sure if I’m going to miss all the activity or not, but I know for sure that I’m going to be too busy  this week to notice.  For the past two weeks I’ve been doing the very minimal amount of work I can so that I could enjoy the last couple weeks of summer with my family – and I’m really glad I did.  We had a lot of fun.  Spent a day at Canada’s Wonderland, went to the beach, spent an afternoon in Grand Bend….. it was great.  Now this week Chris is back to work, the kids are back to school and I have some serious catch up time, so please check back often this week for new blog posts!  For today here are some photos of my munchkins just before they got on the bus.  Our two oldest girls – Bailey & Rachael are off to St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School and the three youngest – Caroline, Warren and Victor attend St. Boniface.  Both are awesome schools!

Happy Back to School – if you are looking for me today, I’ll be enjoying the silence!

Our Big Build – My New Studio!

I know I blogged a while back about building a studio… and if you are on Facebook you’ve been following regular photo updates, but I thought I should blog about our progress regardless.  It’s been a busy busy summer here.  Please keep in mind that the following photos were are all taken with my point and shoot camera…. to document our progress… not to show off my photography skills.  Please don’t judge :)   This is our house on April 10th, 2011.  We were just starting the demolition of the old addition on the back of our house.

We were busy for weeks recovering the bricks off the east wall of our main house and also behind the white siding of the addition…. yes there were bricks under that nasty aluminium.  We cleaned them and stacked them so we can reuse them on the new piece of the house.  Time consuming but totally worth the effort.

May 20th – Ready for the backhoe to take it away…..  I must say it was rather alarming how easy it was for it to get torn down.

And time to dig…. a big big hole.

Chris is a pretty big guy, but he sure doesn’t look it in this photo.

Time for footings.  The kids have been super interested in all that’s going on… and I think it’s awesome how they will look back and remember this whole project…. but my biggest concern is that they stay safe during the process.  So my answer to wanting to watch the big trucks and cranes was to tuck them safely away on the roof of our garage.  It’s pretty flat up there and they are completely safe and out of the way, plus they have an awesome view of what’s going on!

After the walls were formed and set it was time for the first floor joists to go on…. this photo was taken on June 15th.

There was a LOT of framing…..

Bailey even got in on the action helping with the second floor walls.  The crane arrived on July 5th to lift up the second floor roof truss.  We really want the new piece to match the old part of our house… which means a tall roof.  Chris is 6’6″…. the roof truss are considerably more.

The windows are in and the roof is ready for steel on July 26th.

The first bricks were layed on August 5th.

This photo is taken just last week.  The east side is all bricked, and ready to move around to the south.  Super excited to see the progress.  Thanks to all our contractors for getting us this far…. Ray Mathonia Backhoeing, D. Regier Construction, Prie-Form Concrete, D & D Electric and Terry Smith Masonry.  … so to recap…..

You’ll notice it doesn’t say “after” as we still have a long way to go, but I couldn’t be more pleased with the progress!

Meet Cynthia Weber – Interior Decorator – Bayfield, Ontario

I’m super excited about this post, for one because it’s a little different photography that I’m used to doing, and second of all because Cynthia Weber (who’s work I’m showcasing) is going to be working with me in decorating my studio this fall.  Cynthia was referred to me by a mutual friend and I knew from our first meeting that I would love working with her.  She’s creative and yet down to earth.  She has a great way of listening to what you want and then running with it and adding in tons of suggestions along the way.  I believe the inspiration with this particular client who’s home I photographed was an English Cottage feel but with a hint of “Bayfield”… artsy and wonderful.  I think you’ll agree it was a mission accomplished!  You can check out the photos from this lovely cottage below and also visit Cynthia’s website to see more of her amazing work! – www.cynthiaweber.com

So here we go…. this is what greats you inside the door.  To the right, the kitchen.  I absolutely love it! Nice and bright and beautiful.

To the left is the dining room,  also nice and bright and ready for entertaining. (my favourite part!)

I absolutely fell in love with these beautiful side chairs in the living room.  The really cool part is they double as extra chairs if needed in the dining room.

This space is so inviting for curling up with a good book, isn’t it??

I absolutely love details.  This custom made ottoman has the greatest legs doesn’t it!  And notice how they match the couch legs?  Super cute!

The master bedroom certainly isn’t big in this little cottage, but it sure is welcoming.  I love the custom headboard that Cynthia created.  Just fabulous!

And again the details!  Matching buttons on the headboard, bedskirt and curtains.  Such a beautiful finished room!

Needless to say I’m super excited to be working with Cynthia to create the studio I’ve always dreamed of!  Can’t wait to show you all.  I’ll be posting more construction photos soon too, so be sure to visit again!!

Playdate anyone?

I think as adults we forget to play.  We are so busy “doing” things that we forget to take a deep breath and just do something we love to do just for the heck of it.  I was absolutely thrilled when my good friend Erin Samuell of A Simple Photograph – invited along to a “playdate” of sorts.  Erin was planning to do a headshot session for Selena of Hazlitt Vintage Rentals and was bringing in the very talented Sonia Ryan to do makeup.  She decided to make the most of it, have her makeup done as well, and asked me if I’d come along and take a few shots of her.  Erin has photographed my family in the past and took some of my all time favourite photos of my husband Chris & I for our 15th anniversary.  It was really neat to trade places and have her in front of my lens and have some fun with my camera.  Here are a few of my favourite shots of Erin.

Now if you haven’t already clicked on the link I posted above by Selena’s name, please take a minute and check out her site and her blog.  She has incredible collection of vintage pieces for rent.  Really really fun stuff.   Here are some shots of Sonia helping to prep her for her shoot….

Pretty as can be isn’t she :) – We headed outside and started snapping.

Recently Selena blogged about making terarrium’s after watching Canadian House and Home’s DIY video, so it only seemed fitting to snap a few photos of that as well!

Great use of an old vintage jar.  Might just have to try this one out myself!

And just one lost of shot of Erin hard at work!

If you’d like to see the photos Erin took of  Selena, check out her blog here. Thanks so much to Erin, Selena and Sonia for inviting me along for the fun!  It was a beautiful day to spend with some beautiful women!

Happy Birthday Rachael!

These past few days have been a bit of a whirl wind!  It’s been a yearly tradition for the last 5 years to do a bit of travelling with my photo friends.  We usually have attended WPPI in Las Vegas, but this year we chose to check out Mystic Seminars in Connecticut.  It was a fabulous (and super busy) weekend of learning.  We decided that since we were so close to NYC we’d extend our trip by a couple days and check out the city.  Don’t worry I’l going to be blogging about Mystic and NYC – but todays blog post has a special dedication instead – because today is my daughter Rachael’s 14th Birthday!  I’m so sorry I couldn’t be home in time to hang out with you.  I know your Dad will do a great job of wrapping your gift and making sure you have a great day!  I want you to know how very proud I am of you and how you continue to amaze me as you grow into a beautiful and intelligent young woman.  I can’t wait to come home and give you (and the rest of our gang) a big giant hug!  Love you all very much and miss you heaps!!

A special thanks to my good friend (and travelling mate) Rachel Peters for snapping this shot of my gorgeous girl when she was visiting us this summer.
