My Challenge to You!

Okay blog readers… here’s my challenge to you.? This week I’ve been thinking about a way I can give back to my own community.??At Christmas time there is always an appeal from all kinds of non-profit organizations to support their causes… shoes for kids in Africa, clean drinking water, shoe boxes for needy kids, just to name the three that have been sent to me directly in the last couple of days, and while?I think these are all great causes, it always makes me?wonder- when there is so much need in our own country and communities?do these seemingly bigger world issues cause us to overlook needs closer to our homes and hearts?? So here’s my plan to support a local cause….. I want each of you to think of the best gift you ever recieved or gave at Christmas.? For everyone?that joins in the fun and comments, I’m going to purchase 1 non-perishable food item and donate it to the local food bank.? How much I donate is totally dependant on you my blog readers. You have until Friday, December 12th to post a comment!

To start things off I’ll share my favourites with you.? I have received lots of wonderful presents over the years, including a lovely saphire?& diamond necklace, but I would have to say that the favourite gift I have received is my KitchenAid mixer.? Now that probably sounds strange… but I love to bake and cook and I would have never spent the money on a good really good mixer.? It was such a surprise when Chris bought it for me.? I was absolutely thrilled.??? I’ve also have lots of great memories of giving a gift…. two of my favorites are the year I bought Chris a really nice set of power tools.? He was just like a little kid.? So excited and couldn’t wait to open the box and plug everything in.? There is also the year that I managed to find Rachael the “Happy Family Barbie” kitchen.? It was discontinued, but I did manage to find one on ebay.? She was soooo excited.

Anyway you get the point… share your memory and I’ll make a food bank donation!? Reminisce away!

Kevin & Emily – Engaged!

I was so excited to meet Kevin & Emily last Saturday.? For starters it’s been a few weeks since I was out shooting and it’s always exciting to pick up my camera again.? I was also so happy to finally meet Kevin & Emily in person.? All of our previous correspondence has been pretty much via email, with the exception of one phone call when we decided to postpone our session due to the crappy weather.? I know I’ve taken a lot of photos in Goderich this summer, but this set was really cool.? Kevin & Emily drove all the way out from Oshawa to have their photos taken at my favourite spots – the old Goderich train stations!? Emily loves old buildings and Kevin loves trains, so they decided it was a perfect fit.??It was cold, but sunny and we had a lot of fun stopping at different spots in Goderich to grab some shots.? I’m sure they guy who lives behind the red door in the photos thinks I’m slightly off my rocker…. but that’s okay, getting the shot was certainly worth the strange looks! Here are a few of my favourites!

Keeping it Real!

I just finished editing Mike & Jennifer’s wedding this morning.? It was a lot of fun.? A few times I actually laughed outloud going through the photos.? After a few weeks time it’s easy to forget a few of the shots.? I love capturing people being authentic and just having fun.? Take these family shots for example.?

?We took the standard shot, and then Jen said – “we have to do a silly picture” …. now honestly I’m not one to make such a request from people, usually because they think I’m a little crazy… but this was Jen’s wedding and her family was happy to give her a great silly photo.? I think it’s fabulous.

And I just couldn’t resist sharing a few more shots from their wedding day.? I love the emotion and love in these shots.

So I guess the moral of the story here is – please be yourself and keep it real.? It’s hard to capture love and emotion if you are afraid of showing any in front of the camera.? I love love love when people have suggestions that show me who they really are.? For Jen’s family it was making a silly family photo, but everyone is different….. and that’s what I love about my job!

Step #1 – Don’t sweat the small stuff

So in keeping with the spirit of remembering what’s important this week I made a decision on Thursday, that going on Victor’s fieldtrip really was more important than all the many things I had to do in the office. ?I always try to make the best use of Victor’s days at school so that the days he is home I’m not stuck in my office all day. ?This week was a tough one. ?Wednesday when Vic was at school my day was consumed with appointments and an unexpected memorial service, so on Thursday when he was going to be gone on a school trip I was really tempted just to pass on it and stay home and accomplish something, but I figured in the grand scheme of things, am I really accomplishing what’s most important? ?Here’s a shot of Vic & I hanging out at the Children’s Museum in London…..

So my apologies to Jennifer & Mike that you’ll have to wait a few more days for your wedding gallery to be online. ? I do promise it will be worth the wait. ?This afternoon I’m off to Goderich to shoot Emily & Kevin’s engagement photos. ?I’m really looking forward to it!

One month till Christmas…….

As I was checking my facebook messages this morning a few people’s status caught my eye….. one month till Christmas. ?Instantly I get this feeling of panic and dread. ?I love Christmas, don’t get me wrong, but every year the stress just about kills me. ?I have five beautiful wonderful kids and all I want to do make sure they like what they get for Christmas….. which is easier said than done. ?There have been Christmas Eve’s where I literally lay in bed and worry. ?I was so glad when my dear friend Krista shared with me a little reality check that you can see for yourself in the video below.

So my question to myself is….. what am I going to do differently this Christmas? ?This Sunday marks the start of the Advent season and I’m going to do my absolute best during the next four weeks to spend less time infront of my computer and more time interacting with my kids and my community. ?Yes of course I’m going to buy the kids some gifts, but I’m certainly going to ask myself…. do they need it, will they use it, and WHY am I buying it…. because I want to, or because I feel I have to?? ?I know I haven’t shared a lot about my beliefs on my blog, but this video literally brought me to tears and it’s message was one I just had to share. So today I’m going to dust off my Christmas cookie cutters, pull out my card making paper and get ready to give my time to my family for the next four weeks…. and hopefully for much longer. ?Life is too short!?
